When we try and delve within, we gradually realize that we are not just the creation but also a tiny bit of the creator. From this perspective, we are all yearning to create at our own level, be it a child, an adolescent or a mature adult. When we remain bereft of the opportunity to create and express our creative instincts, we tend to have a stifled growth. We are no longer able to reach the true potential that lies within each of us.

It then becomes imperative for us, as discerning adults, to give the opportunity and the skill set to our children to start creating and sharing their creations with the world around them.

Here are 10 reasons why we must help nurture the creator within our child, hone his creative skills and let his expression be a source of joy for him and others around him. Creative writing brings a unique blend of multi-dimensional growth in an individual.

1. Creative Writing sessions develop Listening Skills

Creative writing classes are a group learning experience. They are a hands-on and live experience for the children where they listen to themselves and the others sharing their views, thoughts, and writings with the participants. This helps them develop the social skill of listening and assimilating information and opinions from the outside world.

It makes them good, focused listeners which translate into better concentration abilities. Listening carefully to the things happening outside helps to heighten the awareness levels of the child at a very young age.

2. Creative Writing sessions develop Thinking Skills

Once the information from the outside world is heard and assimilated, the children are encouraged to think and share their thoughts about what has been voiced and shared. This allows them to develop their analytical skills and give a coherent shape to their thoughts. Over a period of time, this translates into good oral communication skills, an imperative in today’s global environment.

3. Creative Writing sessions develop Reading Skills

The participants are given pieces by published authors to read amongst their peers. A mix of loud and metal reading is encouraged to develop their reading skills. This helps them develop not only sharp mental assimilation and comprehension abilities but also makes them confident vocalizers.

4. Creative writing sessions develop Writing skills

This one is supposedly an obvious and expected outcome of attending these classes. However, through a participative approach, the child is given a platform for the expression of his work. An expressive child makes a happy adult. When we give our children tools such as creative writing, it helps them develop their own body of work and instills a sense of confidence in them and their abilities.

They are not only able to create but also share their creations with everyone. Recognition and appreciation go a long way in launching a new life onto a path of joy and wonder. Creative writing is an art and a science at the same time. The skills that these classes impart, gradually equip the child to express multi-dimensionally.

5. Creative Writing sessions develop Speaking skills

The participants of creative writing classes are constantly sharing by reading, writing and speaking. Listening to your own self-speak helps a child become confident with his or her own voice being heard in public. They tend to drop their inhibitions about being a focal speaker and sharing their thoughts on topics of interest.

6. Creative Writing sessions help to study and understanding human behavior intricately-

Creative writing has a basket of varied tools that let the child observe and interpret the world intricately. They develop a keen eye right from a very young age and this trait brings a deep sense of understanding the world from multiple perspectives. Any skill set that is honed from a young and impressionable age becomes a part of the personality.

7. Creative Writing sessions will create Sensitized individuals

A child who has had opportunity to express and also listen to other perspectives from a young age will learn to appreciate and evaluate other perspectives. This trait will make our future generations caring and sensitive. This is one of the most relevant and practical ways to strengthen the foundation of a society that we leave for our children.

8. Giving and receiving feedback in a constructive way

The participants of these classes regularly share their work, allow a critical appraisal of their work by the instructor and the peers. Such an approach helps them take criticism and feedback constructively. They use these inputs to improvise their written and oral performance and communication.

9. Creating their own anthologies and sharing it-

Creating a substantial body of work boosts confidence. A portfolio of writings will bring in a sense of gratification and self-confidence. We might not realize it now, but such treasures can go a long way in building strong, independent adults.

10. Thinking from multiple points of view

The Point of View of a reader (an end-user of written material) and the Point of View of an Author (The Creator) are the main elements in a reading chain. The last point which I will bring to the fore in this article is a very crucial one.

Besides all the above-mentioned positives that Creative writing can bring to your child, the most unique and least celebrated one is the development of a unique point of view.

The child learns to analyze information from the point of view of the reader and also from the point of view of the author. Broadly speaking, in the progressive years, this skill will allow the child to read from the point of view of the reader and the writer.

He will analyze information from the point of view of the creator or dispenser of the information and parallelly also from the point of view of the reader or the receiver. This adult will be better equipped to read between the lines and analyze information from multiple perspectives.

creative writing

A recent study conducted at Harvard reveals that we learn the maximum by doing and not by rote learning. Creative writing is an activity that is focused on live, hands-on learning.

We learn through experiencing and observing the world around us, writing elegantly or forcefully to capture it and sharing our experiences and perceptions. This translates into exponential growth, satisfaction, and self- discovery.

Creative writing blends a plethora of aspects that are pivotal to creating bright, young, sensitive, caring minds who are expressive and constructive in their approach.
